Bad Running Weather?

Whether the weather be fine,
Or whether the weather be not,
Whether the weather be cold,
Or whether the weather be hot,
We'll weather the weather
Whatever the weather
Whether we like it or not.

No excuses...get out there and run!  Whatever your weather, someone else has it worse.  It might be bad today, even worse tomorrow, but it'll get better. Conquer your fears, fight the inclement weather, and go for a run.  Today I woke up to -2 degree temperatures...that's without windchill!

I saw the above poem quoted by Eric Grossman (excellent trail runner) in the November 2010 issue of Running Times.  Now that I'm fully "immersed" in another Illinois winter, it seemed like a good time to remind myself (and you!) that we can "weather the weather"--even if we don't like it.

PS: My running streak is now up to 20 days and going strong. I even added a little count-up ticker on the right side bar.  It will be one day behind since it counts up, but doesn't include the first day in the count.

It not the weather - it is the traction on roads and sidewalks. At my age a fall on a hard surface is a definite no no. I could drive to a trail but not alone. No one seem to post any weekend trail runs! So barefoot basement is the right thing for now.

I hear you about traction. Trails are much safer than icy streets. I'm doing some treadmill runs. Those darn screws in the shoes work pretty well-especially on trails.

I agree with what both of you are saying when it comes to the safety issue of running outside during the winter. However, I will add that more people need to give it a chance. We've been in quite the cold spell over these last few days in Iowa and I've run outside everyday for at least an hour and a half. It's really not that big of a deal when you dress properly. I work at a YMCA and I see treadmill use multiply greatly this time of year and I can't help but to think that so many of these people are missing out. Over the last week I've run on trail and road that snakes through some of the most beautiful snow covered landscape I've ever seen. You just don't get that when you're in your shorts and t-shirt, pounding away on the treadmill, while watching CNN. I'm not saying it's for everyone but I do think that if more people were to think..hey, I can run outside when it's only 5 degrees out..they might just find something that they love. Something that's a perfect offset to the unyielding heat and humidity that is summer in the Midwest.

I agree Brad. Just came back from a run in fresh snow this morning (central Illinois got about 4 inches last night). It was beautiful. Wish I had more time to hit the trails, but I have to get to work. Certainly more peaceful and scenic than the blistering summer heat!
