There's is a guest post (in the "guide" section of the web site) on
Birthday Shoes that categorizes the various barefoot running shoes we have available right now (and coming in the near future). The guide was posted on September 7, 2010 and is called "
Barefoot Running Shoes." Pretty interesting and it should generate some nice discussion on what "counts" as a minimalist shoe. My dear Mizuno Wave Universe 3 was excluded because it has too much heel to toe drop (6mm or more). Your thoughts?
For what it's worth, I list quite a few minimalist shoes on the left side bar of this blog. I'm currently running in these minimalist shoes:
- VFF Bikila
- VFF KSO
- Feelmax Osma
- Mizuno Wave Universe 3 (and the much older Revolver)
- NB 790 (precursor to the MT100)
- Nike Free (with zero heel to toe drop modification)
I have too many running shoes...including a few "non-minimalist" ones that get occasional wear. They are nice reminders of how far I have come over the last 12-18 months. My Inov-8 Flyroc 310s sure seem clunky...and they used to be my "minimalist" trail shoe of choice. Times are changing!

Thanks for the link. Hard to believe how far you run barefoot! I'd like to start, just somehow keep putting it off.
I don't run that far barefoot--maybe 5 miles at a time on easy trails. I'd like to work up to a full 50K in my VFFs, and maybe 10 miles barefoot.
Give it a try--lots of fun!
I've been trying to get into minimalist running for a couple of months now, and am dealing with a minor setback at the moment as I definitely pushed myself too far too soon. To get better I've been scaling things back, so I did a half hour run in my old running shoes last night, followed by 10 minutes barefoot. It was my first time wearing running shoes in 2 months, and wow do I feel clunky in those things.
Can't wait until I can push myself harder in my VFF's..
Taylor,
It takes time to build up to any meaningful distance barefoot or in VFFs. Hang in there!
When I first choose running on vibram five fingers shoes I feel I will not regret it and yes. I'm not, it is a very good shoes I ever had. It is so comfortable and flexible.
Great job chris...
